One idea: “The StartingBloc Fellowship is a global community of leaders meeting this moment to define our future. StartingBloc convenes people who lead with trust, abundance, equity, and deep respect for our planet and provides training to amplify their work and mission. As a Fellow, I developed skills in storytelling, working across different value systems and managing tension, and bringing equity practices into my work.”

  1. We understand that every person in this community is on their own journey. We recognize that we all make mistakes. We commit to being held accountable. We hold one another accountable with care.
  2. We are a community built on inclusion and deep connections. We need not agree on everything, but we are committed to supporting each other’s growth and well-being as a community. We lean into courage on the edge of understanding.
  3. We use I statements and speak from our own lived experience. We speak for ourselves and not on behalf of anyone else. We allow for others to fully do the same.
  4. We create a culture of generosity: we ask for what we need and give what we can.
  5. We uphold a commitment to showing up, for real. We encourage one another to bring multiple facets of our identities into space.

Background + Process

The creation of these norms began in June 2018 through a Fellow-led deliberative survey with 60+ participants, plus external consultations with social-justice based practitioners and data from the 2018 SB Branding feedback calls and surveys. The following is a co-created list driven by the leadership of the SB community, Team, Board, Regional Leadership, and SB’s external social justice consultants.

Why?

At StartingBloc, we believe in competence and badass achievement. We believe in maturity and the wisdom and perspective that it provides us in moments where we lean on ourselves and on one another. We believe in authenticity and in naming our values. We believe that we have a lot of work to do and that we can always strive to be better. As a part of that, we want to uplift ways of being together. Norms help us to share a common language and commitment of care for one another.

What?

These norms are living agreements for how we will each commit to showing up for ourselves and one another when we are in community together. These norms will be refreshed on a quarterly basis through a community-wide selection process.
